Saint Vincent de Paul

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SVP) is active in the parish of St Mary’s, Middlewich and St Margaret Ward, Holmes Chapel. The aim of the SVP is to help those who need assistance in any way. The concept of need is interpreted widely, and is broader than financial hardship. The essential work of the SVP is person to person contact - offering the hand of Christian friendship. So visiting the sick at home or in hospital, offering friendship to the lonely and to those in residential care and providing practical assistance such as arranging transport to Mass, form a large part of the group’s work.

More specific practical assistance can sometimes be given depending on the nature of the request and the capacity of the group. Anyone needing assistance is invited to contact the group using the contact details on the Parish Groups page of this website.

The Society is named after St Vincent de Paul who devoted his life to helping the underprivileged and the needy. It was founded in Paris in 1833 and is now an international Christian organisation active in over one hundred countries worldwide. In our parish the group has been founded as a simple response to Christ’s command that we care for our neighbour and help each other whenever there is need to do so. Members of the parish SVP group meet regularly - firstly to pray together. This is understood as an essential first step before members then review the ongoing work of the group and discuss how to meet fresh requests for help or assistance. This is a spiritual and practical response by the SVP, to the call to support our neighbour.

The group is open to any new members who might wish to join us, or who might like to find out more information about our work. Contact details are shown on the Parish Groups page of this website.  Contacts link.
